This document provides the basic steps required to add an alphanumeric text mobile device entry to the mobile device alert within IPSentry.  You should refer to the mobile device alert documentation for details regarding various field entries.

  1. Select the Pager tab under Alerts

  2. Set the Enabled status to Yes

  3. Click the Add button to insert a new entry.

  4. Set the Paging Type to Text via SMS/TAP

  5. At this point, you have the option of using TAPI or Direct to Com.
Use of TAPI will depend on your system configuration, hardware,  and the need to share the com port with other apps such as Fax software and such.  We recommend the use of Direct to Com unless you have a specific need to make use of TAPI.

  6. Leave the Script File set to (none).

  7. Select the TAP/SMS Delivery tab.

  8. Enter the Terminal number provided by your paging company for TAP based paging in the TAP Terminal # field.

  9. Enter the Mobile Device ID (phone #) or PIN provided by your service company in the SMS Device# field.
This can vary greatly among mobile device companies.  In most cases, it will be a 7 digit number that is either part of your cell number or part of the PIN assigned by the service company.

  10. Set the Connect Timeout to an adequate value for modem connection. We recommend a value of 45 or higher.

  11. Enter the alpha paging password (if required) in the Password field.  This is rarely required.

  12. Enter the message to send for this alert in the Text Message field.

  13. Enter the maximum allowable message length in the Max Length field.
Your mobile service should provide you with this value and it can range greatly among providers.
IPSentry will only send the first (n) characters of the message up to this point.

  14. If you want or require that all pages be sent in UPPER CASE ONLY, mark the Force Uppercase as checked.

  15. Select the Modem Settings Tab

  16. Select the Com port to which the modem is attached.

  17. Based on information provided to you by your paging service, set the Speed and Settings appropriately.
In some cases, you may need to set the speed higher than that specified depending on the modem configuration being used.

  18. Set the Modem Init to ATE0 (Refer to your modem manual for additional/alternate settings)
Many customers find ATE0M1 to be useful in order to listen to the progress of dial/negotiate/connect)

  19. Set the Dial String to ATDT (Refer to your modem manual for additional/alternate settings)

  20. Click the TEST button to test your pager configuration.

The most common problems encountered with basic alpha paging are:

  1. Selecting the wrong COM port for the modem.

  2. Entering a mobile device number rather than a dialup terminal number in the Dial Number field.

If you dial this number with a standard phone, you should hear only a modem negotiation attempt.

If you hear anything else (voice message, automated attendant, etc... you have the wrong number)

  3. Entering the wrong Pager ID or PIN
Be sure to ask your service provider for the pager ID that will be used with the TAP system.
Some systems use entire device numbers including area code.
Some systems use only the last 7 digits of the device phone number.
Some systems use a full 10 digit PIN
Some systems use only the last 7 digits of your PIN.
This varies so greatly that special attention must be given to obtaining the correct device ID.

  4. Wrong Terminal Number
Paging providers may have special terminal numbers for groups of pagers.  While you may be connecting to your pager providers TAP terminal, it may be the wrong one for your pager.  Insure that your pager is going to be paged from the terminal begin contacted.
